Remote Learning
Remote Learning Contingency Plan
In response to situations that may require a shift to remote learning, Loughborough C of E Primary School is committed to maintaining continuity in children's education. This plan ensures that all pupils can access high-quality learning regardless of external circumstances, including isolation, school closures, or other disruptions. We recognise that some households may face challenges accessing technology, and we are committed to providing support accordingly.
This plan is designed to apply in the following circumstances:
Level 1 – Individual Isolation: When an individual pupil is self-isolating due to health-related concerns, awaiting test results, or if a family member tests positive.
Level 2 – School-wide or Cohort Closure: In the event of a school closure or bubble closure due to an outbreak, either locally or nationally.
Our remote learning approach complies with government guidelines and aims to offer a structured learning experience comparable to that provided in the classroom. We will utilise platforms such as Class Dojo (Years 1-6), Tapestry (Early Years), and Microsoft Teams for virtual classrooms, enabling communication and lesson delivery.
Objectives for Remote Learning
When teaching remotely, our goal is to:
- Deliver lessons that are of equivalent length to in-person teaching, with daily contact between students and teachers.
- Provide meaningful, ambitious assignments that span multiple subjects.
- Follow a structured, well-sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge incrementally.
- Offer clear, frequent explanations of new content through teacher videos, online resources, and third-party platforms such as Oak National Academy and BBC Bitesize.
- Assess progress regularly and adjust lesson pace based on student needs.
- Consider the developmental stage and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) of each child, ensuring support without overburdening parents.
- Provide printed resources (e.g., textbooks or workbooks) for students without online access.
Remote Learning Provision: Two Levels
Level 1 – Individual Isolation
For pupils who are self-isolating or awaiting test results, teachers will:
- Contact parents via Class Dojo, Tapestry, or email to share relevant learning resources, assignments, and instructions. This may include content from third-party providers such as Oak National Academy or BBC Bitesize.
- Ensure that pupils can interact with their teachers for feedback on completed work within 48 hours.
- Encourage the use of Oak National Academy's lessons, which align with our teaching ethos, emphasising retrieval practice, high-quality modeling, and consolidating activities.
Level 2 – School or Cohort Closure
In the event of a school-wide or cohort closure, we will:
- Provide continuity in the curriculum via Microsoft Teams, where virtual classrooms will host sessions for students to engage in live discussions and 'catch-up' activities.
- Use a blend of teacher-produced materials, videos, and external resources for each subject area.
- Communicate through Class Dojo for updates, celebrations, and feedback.
- In Early Years, we will continue using Tapestry to share activities and maintain communication with parents.
Key Learning Areas
- Daily English Lessons: Including grammar, spelling, and writing exercises, structured similarly to in-class lessons.
- Daily Maths Lessons: With follow-up activities and, where applicable, use of online resources like Century Tech.
- Daily Reading: Encouraged through class activities and online quizzes for KS2 (e.g., Accelerated Reader).
- PE: (at least 3 times per week up to 20 minutes each) will encourage children to keep active. These may be links to videos and content from external providers. Daily challenge activities may also be used to provide good incentive and motivation for pupils.
- Cross-curricular Topics: Including science, history, or geography, linked to ongoing school topics.
- PHSE and RE Lessons: Addressing key areas of wellbeing and reflection.
- Collective Worship: Provided at least three times a week, either live or pre-recorded, with various content sources.
Safeguarding & Wellbeing
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils during remote learning, we will:
- Contact families to ensure understanding of the isolation process and to confirm communication of test results.
- Provide food parcels for eligible children, where necessary.
- Offer regular ‘safe and well checks’ for vulnerable children through the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
- Provide personalised support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through the SENDCo.
For children who are not engaging in remote learning, a teacher will follow up with a phone call, and the DSL may get in touch with the family to identify and address any obstacles to engagement.
Physical Learning Resources
In cases where it is possible, physical resources may be sent home to support learning, such as:
- Stationery (pens, pencils, rulers, etc.)
- Whiteboards and markers
- Workbooks and exercise books
- Reading materials
Support for Limited Device Access
For children who face challenges accessing online learning, the school will:
- Provide devices or arrange for hard-copy materials to be delivered if needed.
- Explore solutions for internet connectivity, such as providing 4G dongles with free data for families that require support.
Access to Online Learning Platforms
Parents and pupils will be given login information for various online platforms, including:
- Microsoft Teams
- Class Dojo (and Tapestry for Early Years)
- Accelerated Reader (for KS2)
- Times Tables Rockstars
- ActiveLearn Maths
- Other educational resources like Oak National Academy, White Rose Maths, and BBC Bitesize.
Online Safety
Parents are encouraged to monitor and guide their children's online activity, set appropriate parental controls, and regularly discuss online safety practices.
